Hallie Hideaway- Oregon Coast Pet-Friendly Retreat in Manzanita

The Hallie Hideaway: A Unique, Pet-Friendly Vacation Rental in Manzanita, Oregon

Manzanita is an uber dog-friendly Oregon beach town with a 7 mile dog-friendly beach just one block from the home. Just shy of a two hour drive from Portland, Manzanita is a beautiful and relaxing escape with access to other nearby dog-friendly beaches like Short Sands in Oswald West State Park and the trails of Nehalem Bay State Park.

Manzanita is so dog-friendly they even host the annual Muttzanita Festival every September where they honor furry companions with contests, auctions and a parade. The event is a fundraiser for Animal Haven By The Sea, a local non-profit dedicated to pet rescue, pet medical assistance, pet food banks and animal fostering.

Manzanita is a tiny town and has just under 700 full time residents, but serves as one of the most comfortable and well-appointed beach towns in Oregon.  Unlike many Oregon coastal towns that require sourcing your good quality food before arriving, Manzanita is complete with an organic grocery store, a well-curated wine shop, wine bar, cocktail bar and restaurants, making it a perfect getaway that requires little to no preparation beforehand.

For those that enjoy golfing, there is a 9 hole golf course, the Manzanita Links. If you like good merch, make sure to check out their gift shop as their seagull logo is a handsome little fella.

Location & Walkability

The town of Manzanita is 98 miles from Portland, in Tillamook County.  From Portland, the drive is simple- head west on Highway 26 until you hit Highway 101, and head south a handful of miles.  Depending on traffic, it should take about 2 hours if you’re coming from Portland.

Laneda Ave. is the main road that goes straight through town and spits you out at the ocean.  There is plenty of parking along Laneda, as well as along the side of the road parallel to the ocean. There is a public restroom available close to the beach, on Laneda Ave. Most, if not all the businesses in Manzanita are stationed along Laneda.

Manzanita is small and extremely walkable. Not even covering one square mile, nowhere is too far to walk within the town, even for our 12 year old dog.  While there is some elevation in the town, Laneda Ave. is pretty flat with just a slight incline as you head east.

The Hallie Hideaway is on Hallie Lane, barely south of Laneda Ave.  Just one block from the beach, the home is a perfect distance to visit the beach multiple times a day. On a quiet dead end street, there was no noise or disturbances heard at all during our stay.

The home is located a short two blocks from Laneda Ave., just a few minutes from Manzanita Coffee Co. where you can grab a coffee on your way to beach access from Laneda (beach access is also available from the south side of town).

Home Details

Hallie Hideaway in Manzanita is a quirky Dutch Barn style construction, which proved to be even more interesting from the inside than the outside.  From the inside, the curved roof gives the sense you are on the underside of a boat.

The home sleeps 6, but the layout of the home would be best for one family or a group of friends.  The bedroom has one king sized bed and an en-suite bathroom. Just off of the dining room is another full bathroom.

The lofted space is accessible by stairs on the far side of the the living room. The large open floor plan is complete with 3 beds and it’s own tv area. With several large windows high up towards the ceiling, the lofted area gets great natural light and feels like you’re in a treehouse.

Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the main draws due to the large size, high ceilings and great layout with an island and bar seating.  It is flooded with natural light from a large rectangular south-facing window which proved to be just as delightful in the evenings to see the moon and stars.

The kitchen is impressively well-stocked- large roasting pans, platters, food processors, coffee grinder and baking sheets of every kind- this space can handily cover an involved holiday gathering.

Living Room & Loft

The living room is spacious and cozy under the dome of the pine slatting. The comfortable sprawling couch pulls out into a bed if needed, and a wood burning stove and a few reading chairs makes the space picture-perfect.  While the large TV is mounted and faces out the sliding doors, the mounted arm can swivel and pull out towards whatever direction you need.  It is a very comfortable watch from the couch.

The TV is set up with Roku so guests can sign into all of their streaming networks. The home also provides a collection of DVD’s.

The sound system is by far one of the highlights of the home as it includes a record player, tape player and cd player, with a broad variety of music for each platform.  My husband and I spent the holidays listening to old country Christmas vinyl and Patsy Cline tapes, as well as some AC/CD and Jefferson Starship albums.  The range of music on hand was delightful and we never once turned on our bluetooth speaker during our stay.

The board game collection on hand was substantial, and my husband and I couldn’t help but play several rounds of Connect Four despite having brought our own games.

Bathrooms & Laundry

The en-suite bathroom has a stand up shower with fabulously hot water. The second bathroom just off the dining room is equipped with a tub shower combo. Plenty of towels were in supply for our three night stay and we never needed to utilize the laundry.

Off of the kitchen the home has a full laundry room with access to a washer and dryer. The large washtub in the laundry room would have been a great amenity to wash our small dog or extra dirty gear if we needed to.

Parking & Outdoor Spaces

Hallie Hideaway has a long driveway with a covered carport for easy unpacking and the rental policy states it can accommodate 2 cars.  Hallie Lane is unpaved and without sidewalks, but parking additional cars nearby likely wouldn’t pose a problem.  Reaching out to the rental company to park additional vehicles in the driveway could also be considered as the driveway could easily accommodate at least one more car.

The front deck is equipped with patio furniture, a fire pit and grill for outdoor hosting.  While these features were covered during our December stay, I can imagine that the deck is a grand place to spend time enjoying the sea air. I did see that the kitchen is equipped with plenty of grilling tools and platters, giving the impression that the patio and grill get a lot of use during the warmer months.

Safety

The entirety of the Oregon coastline is within the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a 700-mile fault line that runs from California to British Columbia.  Due to the risk of a tsunami in the event of an earthquake of high magnitude, the home is appropriately outfitted with maps and safety planning in the event of evacuation, with important phone numbers and safety guidelines posted.  The home also provides flashlights and lanterns for safety.

Manzanita is an extremely safe community. Crime rates are exceedingly low, but please take normal precautions as you would anywhere and never turn your back on the ocean.

Pet-Friendly Amenities

Manzanita has no shortage of pet-friendly homes, but the policies and pet-specific amenities can differ widely.  Hallie Hideaway supplies dog-specific towels, food and water bowls, poop bags, and a few hard toys for your pup’s enjoyment.  Booking through Booking.com did not tack on additional pet fees to the reservation.

Local Businesses

Manzanita has all you need for a delightful stay, making it an easy weekend destination to pop over to without having to stop for groceries and supplies on the way.  Manzanita Grocery and Deli is the main grocery store in town, and has a robust wine section and a good fresh meat and seafood counter as well as a fabulous hot bar.  For organic groceries, check out Wild Grocery and Cafe just up the road.

A trip to Manzanita is never complete without a stop (or two) at The Winery at Manzanita. This dog-friendly wine bar has a year round patio with oversized barrel fire pits and deep Adirondack chairs you can’t help but relax in. This outpost is one of several throughout Oregon, and most of the grapes are grown at the owner’s vineyard in Carlton, Oregon. For a deeper dive about the wine bar and the owner’s history, please read my previous post here.

For cocktails, stop into the The Rusty Moose, a cozy bar with a charming little patio out front.  The bar is named after the owner’s beloved dogs, now since passed, but you will see depictions of them inside the bar on the walls. This dog-friendly bar adores dogs, so if you bring your fur baby, they’ll likely be treated to a ‘Pup Cup’, a bowl of sliced prosciutto with whip cream. Our dog was beside herself.

If you prefer to enjoy your bottles in the comfort of your own home, head to Dixie’s Vino. The quaint shop has a great selection of both local and imported wines at various price points and offers tastings as well.

Grab a coffee for your beach walk at Manzanita Coffee Co., and El Trio Loco is the spot for giant platters of tacos and enchiladas.  If you forget any supplies for your fur baby, pop into Four Paws On The Beach, the only pet store in Manzanita. Finally, if you need some pampering for yourself, book a massage or sauna at Spa Manzanita.

There are also great shops and art galleries along Laneda. Check out Unfurl or Moxie Fair Trade for gifts or apparel.

Operating hours vary throughout the seasons so make sure to check hours to ensure a visit to any of these businesses during your stay in Manzanita.

Booking The House

Hallie Hideaway ($137/night) is managed through Vacasa, but appears to be bookable through all the major sites, although rates and fees will differ between platforms. Homes managed by Vacasa have proven to have consistent quality that I have come to depend on. The properties are immaculately cleaned by a professional team and the ability to reach out to the company day or night gives me peace of mind.

I super appreciate the accidental damage insurance that covers damages up to $3000- it was a huge relief when my husband accidentally knocked the tail off of a decorative whale figurine while unloading the car at another rental property earlier in the year.

I have no affiliation with Vacasa, but I can say with confidence that I am yet to have a bad experience with their rentals and have been delighted with every stay. The homes regularly surpass my expectations based on the reviews and photos.

NEARBY ATTRACTIONS

Nehalem is a small town just east of Manzanita, about a 5 minute drive away.  Wanda’s Cafe and Bakery has been a staple in Nehalem for decades and has incredible cinnamon rolls.  Riverside Fish ‘n Chips is a cart in a cart pod just off of 7th street by the water, and I recommend the fish tacos and cod basket. The crispy batter on the fish and fries is impressive and the coleslaw is delicious.

Nearby Wheeler is another small town within a 15 drive from Manzanita.  Get lost in the antique mall Wheeler Station Antiques that’s been there for 33 years. Its labyrinthine layout will have you gasping at the sheer expanse of the space, and the curiosities inside will keep you entertained for hours.  During operating months, Wheeler Depot is a stop along the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad, a train that runs between Rockaway and Garibaldi, with a stop in Wheeler.

Final Thoughts

Manzanita on the Oregon coast is a peaceful town for a retreat of any length of time, and Hallie Hideaway is a great pet-friendly lodging option right by the beach.  For small groups or family, the home offers everything you need to enjoy a relaxing time at the coast.

For another pet-friendly lodging in Manzanita, check out my post about about a two-bedroom home on the other side of Laneda Ave. While it’s a bit further from the beach than Hallie Hideway, the large backyard and multiple bedrooms make it a better option for multiple coupled or if you prefer a single story home for your stay.
