I had to begin my al pastor discovery, so our first stop was Tacos y Antojitos Mi Rey in Todos Santos.
The elation I felt when I turned down Manuel Marquez de Leon from Benito Juarez to see a row of taco stands surprised even me, and our table of five claimed our space at the picnic table. With cans of Pacificos and Coronas in hands, picnic table covered in tacos and guacamole, I finally felt at peace.
The chips and guac was a giant platter, the chips thick and fresh. Little dishes of quartered limes and hearty slices of cucumber littered the table, as we all took turns giving our input on the flavor profiles of the various salsas. The grilled shrimp tacos were smothered in fresh guacamole and pico de gallo, and the al pastor tacos were topped with grilled onions and guacamole.
The pastor was tender and smoky, and the grilled onions added a tinge of sweetness, but the avocado on top balanced it all out. Everyone at the table had rave reviews of their tacos — carne asada, chicken, and chorizo. The house-made corn tortillas had a nice char on them, despite the tacos coming on a single tortilla, which I later surmised was typical at taco stands in Todos Santos.

The service at this family-run taqueria was excellent — super friendly and attentive, making sure everything was wonderful and we had everything we needed. There wasn’t a ton of seating at Mi Rey — we took the large covered picnic table and there were a few stools pulled up to the cart for extra seating.
It was a very casual but colorful setting, super clean, with the family taking extra care to make sure we had all the napkins we needed for our messy but joyful experience.

Unbeknownst to us, they didn’t have beer on their menu. After our server rattled off the beer options and we made our orders, we saw her rounding the corner with a plastic bag full of beer cans from the store several minutes later. Cold beers delivered to our hands within minutes from off-site and apparently off-menu. True customer service.
Taco prices depended on the kind of meat but started at 30 pesos ($1.70 USD). Google says they’re open 9am to 6pm, but I’m quite sure they closed earlier on the Sunday we were there — a lot of places in Todos Santos wind down late afternoon on Sundays if they’re open at all.
Mi Rey is absolutely worth the stop and I have regrets at not eating there again during my stay in Todos Santos. I regularly think about that platter of guacamole and their chips, and I want badly to explore more of their menu as they are absolutely one of the best taco stands in Todos Santos.
